Why Is My Dryer Not Heating?

A dryer that runs but does not produce heat can be confusing because many parts of the appliance may appear to work normally. The control panel turns on, the drum rotates, and the cycle starts — yet the clothes remain cold and wet.

The reason is that the motor, controls, airflow system, and heating system do not always depend on exactly the same components or electrical circuits. A failure in the heating circuit can therefore leave the rest of the dryer operating normally.

The exact cause also depends on whether the dryer is electric or gas. Electric dryers typically generate heat with a resistance heating element, while gas dryers use an igniter, gas valve, burner, and flame-sensing system.

Before replacing parts, it is important to determine what type of heating problem you actually have.

Ask a few questions first:

  • Does the dryer produce no heat at all?
  • Does it heat only for the first few minutes?
  • Does it produce some heat but take several cycles to dry?
  • Does the dryer become unusually hot?
  • Does the breaker trip?
  • Does a gas dryer ignite initially and then stop heating?

Start With These Checks Before Troubleshooting

Before assuming that an internal dryer component has failed, check a few basic things that can cause a dryer to run without producing normal heat.

Check the cycle settings. Make sure the dryer is not set to Air Fluff, Air Dry, or another no-heat cycle. Some delicate or energy-saving cycles may also use lower temperatures than expected.

Check the circuit breakers. Most electric dryers require 240 volts supplied through two legs of a circuit. In some situations, one breaker can trip while the dryer still receives enough power for the motor and controls to operate. The drum may turn normally even though the heating element receives no power.

Check the lint filter and airflow. A heavily restricted lint filter or dryer vent can reduce airflow, increase internal temperature, and cause safety devices to interrupt the heating system.

Check whether the dryer produces any heat at all. Completely cold air and weak or intermittent heat can indicate different problems. This distinction can make troubleshooting much easier.

1. Heating Element

The heating element is one of the most recognizable causes of an electric dryer that runs but does not heat.

What the heating element does

Electric dryers typically use a resistance coil mounted inside a metal housing.

When electrical current flows through the coil, electrical resistance causes the wire to become extremely hot.

The blower then moves air across the heating element and into the dryer drum.

The process is approximately:

Heating Element → Heated Air → Drum → Wet Clothes

Why heating elements fail

The element expands and contracts every time it heats and cools.

After hundreds or thousands of cycles, the metal can weaken.

Eventually, the coil may:

  • crack
  • burn through

  • short against the housing
  • become damaged from overheating

Signs of a bad heating element

If the circuit is open, the resistance coil has normally failed.

The thermal fuse is a safety device.

Its purpose is not to regulate normal temperature. Its purpose is to stop operation when the dryer reaches an unsafe temperature.

Why thermal fuses fail

Once it opens, it normally cannot be reset.
