Understanding Your Dryer: How It Works and Why Problems Occur

A clothes dryer may seem like a relatively simple appliance: you load wet clothes, select a cycle, and warm air removes the moisture. Inside the machine, however, several mechanical, electrical, and airflow systems must work together for the dryer to operate correctly.

Cycling Thermostat

A blown thermal fuse may be the result of another problem rather than the original cause.

For example, restricted airflow can cause abnormal temperatures, which can eventually cause a thermal fuse to open.

Replacing the fuse without finding the reason the dryer overheated may result in another failure.

This is why proper dryer diagnosis involves understanding the system rather than simply replacing the component that has stopped working.

Modern dryers contain much more electronics than older machines.

Depending on the model, the dryer may use:

  • electronic control boards
  • relays
  • timers
  • moisture sensors
  • temperature sensors
  • door switches
  • motor switches
  • user interface boards
  • wiring harnesses

The control system coordinates the different parts of the drying cycle.

When you select a cycle and press Start, the dryer may need to verify that the door is closed, start the motor, activate the heating circuit, monitor temperature and moisture, and determine when the cycle should end.
